Characterization of pore fluids and their interaction with the surrounding rock using the seismic method is of uppermost importance in exploration geophysics and crustal seismology.
Our research focuses on the characterization of seismic wave fields in heterogeneous (poro-)elastic structures. We are interested in the quantification of seismic signatures like wave attenuation due to scattering at multi-scale heterogeneities and dissipation effects in fluid-saturated porous media. We develop rock physics models for partially-saturated and fractured rocks and advance numerical finite-difference procedures to simulate wave propagation in poroelastic solids.
The Rock Physics working group at the Geophysical Institute of Karlsruhe University is an Emmy Noether junior research group of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Head of the team is Tobias Müller.
Since September of this year, Tobias continues his work on rock physics at the CSIRO Petroleum in Perth, Australia. You may find all new contact information on the website Tobias Müller.
Upcoming eventsThe First InterPore Conference, entitled "1st International Conference on Challenges of Porous Media and the inaugural meeting of the International Society for Porous Media" will be held in Kaiserslautern, Germany, March 11–14, 2009. The conference will be organized by Prof. Oleg Iliev of ITWM and his colleagues. The European Association of Geoscientist and Engineers meets this year in Amsterdam at the 71st EAGE annual meeting. The conference date is 8–11 June 2009. In honor to Maurice Biot, in New York the fourth Biot-Conference is held at the same time as the EAGE meeting (8–10 June 2009). The conference will emphasize on the theories and applications of poromechanics to new and emerging fields, including life science, earth science, and new materials, in addition to the traditional areas of poromechanics such as geotechnical engineering, petroleum engineering, acoustics, etc. |
Past eventsThe Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) met at the 77th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas from september 23–28 2007. We presented new results in the field of theoretical and numerical rock physics. From june 12–15 2006 the 68th EAGE Conference & Exhibition took place in Vienna with us on board. Find out about the topics we presented. The DGG Annual Meeting 2007 took place march 26–29 in Aachen, Germany. Main topics have been geothermal production and high-performance computing. We have made a compilation of contributions from our working group. |
